IIT Patna student dies by suicide, campus protests erupt
A third-year B.Tech (Mathematics and Computing) student from Telangana ended his life by jumping from the seventh floor of an IIT Patna hostel building on Tuesday.
Police were alerted around noon and arrived with IIT director Prof. T.N. Singh, finding the student in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Netaji Subhash Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The motive behind the tragedy remains unclear. Forensic experts have collected evidence, including the student’s phone and belongings. Authorities have sealed the hostel and launched a probe, questioning the warden and classmates.
Following the incident, a large number of students gathered in protest, demanding a thorough investigation. Additional police forces have been deployed to control the situation.
IIT Patna’s registrar, Sanjay Kumar, stated in a press release that the student fell from the hostel balcony but did not disclose his identity. City SP (West) Sharath R.S. confirmed that an unnatural death case has been filed.
Investigators are reviewing the victim’s call records and personal interactions to determine the cause of distress. His body has been sent for a post-mortem, and his family has been informed.
This tragedy follows a similar case at NIT Patna last September, where a female student from Andhra Pradesh was found hanging in her hostel room.
