The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 40–50 kmph on June 17 and 18. While rainfall intensity is expected to ease from June 19, sporadic showers may persist, IMD officials said.
In line with the intensifying southwest monsoon, coastal Karnataka is bracing for extremely heavy rain, with a red alert issued for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada on June 17. These districts are also dealing with strong winds, lightning, and rough sea conditions, with wave heights predicted between 4 to 4.6 metres. Fishermen and small boat operators have been urged to suspend activities temporarily for safety.
Further inland, an orange alert has been declared for South Interior Karnataka, covering regions such as Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, and Mysuru, which are expected to receive very heavy rainfall and strong winds. North Interior Karnataka is also under yellow to orange alerts, anticipating thunderstorms and heavy downpours till June 18.
On June 18, the red alert in coastal areas will be downgraded to orange, but rain is expected to continue across many parts of the state. Bengaluru may experience lighter rain compared to earlier days, though cloud cover and scattered showers will likely persist.
This surge in precipitation marks a revival of the southwest monsoon, which had weakened earlier in the month. The monsoon is now gaining strength across western and central India, triggering weather alerts not just in Karnataka, but also in Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of eastern India.
