India has emerged as the fastest-growing market for ChatGPT, following the launch of its new image-generation feature, which has taken the internet by storm. According to Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s COO, over 130 million users have generated more than 700 million images within just a week of the feature’s release. Lightcap shared his excitement on social media, saying, “Very crazy first week for images in ChatGPT – over 130M users have generated 700M+ images since last Tuesday. India is now our fastest-growing ChatGPT market. The range of visual creativity has been extremely inspiring.”

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, also expressed his admiration for India’s rapid adoption of AI, noting, “What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity—India is outpacing the world.” Altman reflected on how quickly ChatGPT has expanded, mentioning that while it took five days to reach one million users at its debut three years ago, the platform now adds one million users every hour.

The surge in India’s ChatGPT users comes amidst discussions between OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Reliance Industries about potential partnerships, including the possibility of Reliance Jio distributing ChatGPT. OpenAI is also exploring lowering ChatGPT’s subscription fees, which could further boost adoption in price-sensitive markets like India.
