New Delhi: India has taken a crucial step toward achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2070 with the launch of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials.

Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi flagged off the trials in New Delhi on Tuesday, with Tata Motors spearheading the initiative.

Speaking at the event, Nitin Gadkari hailed hydrogen as the “fuel of the future,” emphasizing its role in transforming India’s transportation sector by reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-sufficiency.

“This initiative will accelerate the transition to sustainable trucking and contribute to a low-carbon future. I applaud Tata Motors for leading this green transport revolution,” he stated.

Minister Pralhad Joshi highlighted hydrogen’s potential in India’s journey towards a zero-carbon economy, calling the trial a milestone under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the trials will assess the feasibility of hydrogen-powered trucks and help establish the required infrastructure.

The project, running for up to 24 months, will deploy 16 hydrogen trucks equipped with Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engines (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H2-FCEV) technologies. These vehicles will operate on major freight routes like Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Pune, and Jamshedpur.

Tata Motors’ Executive Director, Girish Wagh, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to zero-emission logistics, stating: “We are committed to developing future-ready mobility solutions that enhance both efficiency and sustainability.”

This initiative marks a major stride towards cleaner and smarter transportation in India.
