India has climbed three spots to rank 130th among 193 countries in the 2023 Human Development Index (HDI), marking a notable achievement driven by advancements in health, education, and national income. The nation’s life expectancy reached an all-time high of 72 years in 2023, a significant rise from 58.6 years in 1990, largely attributed to health sector initiatives. Education also saw improvements, with the mean years of schooling increasing from 6.6 to 6.9 years in 2023.
Despite this progress, the UNDP report highlights a global decline in human development to its lowest point in 35 years. It suggests that the world, including India, faces a delayed path to achieving high human development, with inequality between countries widening. “Inequality between low and high HDI nations has been increasing for four consecutive years,” the report noted.
India’s HDI value of 0.685 places it in the “medium human development” category, nearing the threshold of 0.7 for high human development. The country’s HDI has increased by over 53% since 1990, outpacing both global and South Asian averages. Economic growth, along with social protection programs like MGNREGA and Jan Dhan Yojana, has played a key role in reducing poverty, with 135 million Indians escaping multidimensional poverty between 2015-16 and 2019-21.
However, the report also pointed out significant income and gender disparities. Gender inequality, in particular, continues to hold back India’s full potential, though steps like the reservation of legislative seats for women show promise for change.
