India Nominated to Key UN Panels on Data and Statistics, Shaping Global Standards

India has made a significant leap on the global stage, being nominated to two prestigious United Nations panels on data and statistics. The country will now contribute to shaping global norms in the use of data science and big data for official statistics. India has secured membership on the United Nations Statistical Council, breaking a significant gap, and has also been nominated to the UN Committee of Experts on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics (UN-CEBD).

Through its participation in these panels, India will help develop global standards in areas such as economic growth, rural access measurement, trade, and sustainability. The country will leverage cutting-edge technologies like AI to provide tools that national statistical offices worldwide can use to enhance their data capabilities.

The big data panel aims to create globally harmonized models for fields critical to economic growth and national well-being, such as development indicators, geospatial information, demographic statistics, gender statistics, and environmental-economic accounting.

India’s involvement in these panels is seen as a recognition of its growing role in global statistical practices, further boosted by pioneering initiatives like the Data Innovation Lab and the exploration of alternate data sources, including satellite imagery and machine learning, to inform policy-making.
