India on Covid Watch Again: Cases Rise in Key Cities as Asia Sees Fresh Wave
India’s health officials are closely tracking a gradual spike in Covid-19infections in several states, even as case counts remain low compared to past surges. Triggered by a broader resurgence across parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore, Indian metros like Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad are witnessing an uptick.
Mumbai’s Mini-Cluster:
Maharashtra recorded 95 new cases in Mumbai in May alone — almost the state’s entire count since January. Sixteen individuals are hospitalised, mostly relocated from KEM to Seven Hills Hospital. Authorities are testing all ILI and SARI cases for Covid-19.
Pune Prepared, No Active Cases:
Pune remains Covid-free for now, with 50 beds on standby at Naidu Hospital. “We had one elderly case earlier this month, now recovered,” said Dr Nina Borade of PMC.
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry See Uptick:
Chennai doctors report more Covid-linked fevers than influenza, prompting postponement of key surgeries. Puducherry logged 12 new cases.
Karnataka & Gujarat Updates:
Karnataka currently has 16 active cases. Gujarat saw an unusual one-day spike in Ahmedabad, reporting seven cases — all Omicron JN.1 variant and in home isolation.
No Panic, Just Precautions:
While no deaths or ICU cases have been linked to the recent rise, experts urge mask use in crowded spaces and recommend flu vaccines to reduce risks from co-infections.
