In response to the devastating earthquake that claimed at least 144 lives and injured over 700 in Myanmar, India has dispatched over 15 tonnes of relief supplies. The aid package includes essential provisions such as tents, blankets, sleeping bags, ready-to-eat meals, hygiene kits, solar lamps, generator sets, and crucial medicines like antibiotics and paracetamol, ANI reported.

The Indian embassy is closely monitoring the situation and confirmed that no Indian nationals have been affected so far. The embassy in Bangkok reassured that all its members and those in the Chiang Mai consulate are safe. It has also issued an emergency contact number for Indian citizens in Thailand.

Myanmar, which sits at the intersection of the Eurasian and Indo-Australian plates, is highly prone to seismic activity. On Friday, the country experienced six earthquakes, according to the National Center for Seismology. Despite its vulnerability, Myanmar still lacks an official national seismic hazard map. Historical data from the International Seismological Centre shows that the region has recorded an average of 140 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or higher annually between 1990 and 2019.

With India’s swift humanitarian response, crucial aid is on its way to support those affected by the disaster.
