Amid ongoing discussions about the potential of artificial intelligence, the Indian government has announced key decisions to boost AI skills and job creation as part of its ambitious IndiaAI Mission. These measures include expanding the IndiaAI fellowship to individuals from various disciplines, such as BA, BSc, and MBA, and providing access to graphics processing units (GPUs) for AI applications to foster the development of innovative solutions. Additionally, the government plans to establish 200 IndiaAI data labs in Tier 2 and 3 cities, offering foundational courses to empower a larger workforce with AI expertise.
India ranks highly in global AI talent production, accounting for 16% of the world’s AI talent. According to the QS World Future Skills Index, India leads in AI skill penetration and is expected to see its AI market grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25%–30% by 2027. This impressive talent pool, combined with strategic government initiatives, positions India as a frontrunner in the global AI landscape.
In a recent meeting, officials from the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and other stakeholders outlined a comprehensive plan to meet the increasing demand for AI skills. The mission’s seven pillars, including compute capacity and datasets platforms, were also discussed. The two ministries have committed to integrating AI courses such as ‘AI programming assistant’ and ‘basics of generative AI’ into ITIs and polytechnics across the country.
Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, emphasized that the AI revolution is not only a technological advancement but also a generational opportunity for India’s youth to lead on the global stage, providing access to cutting-edge skills, infrastructure, and fostering innovation.
