India is on track to become home to the world’s second-largest metro network, according to Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal. With 997 kilometers of metro rail currently under construction in 28 cities across the country, India is rapidly expanding its urban transport infrastructure. Additionally, 993 kilometers of metro rail are already operational in 23 cities. This expansion is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen urban mobility, which is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by India’s growing urban population.

In his recent address to the consultative committee of Parliament, the minister emphasized that urban mobility plays a key role in the development of the country’s cities. He further highlighted the government’s commitment to building an efficient and sustainable metro network. The expansion also includes the ‘PM-eBus Sewa,’ a scheme designed to deploy 10,000 electric buses across cities under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. These initiatives aim to reduce traffic congestion, promote eco-friendly transportation, and enhance the overall urban experience for citizens.
