India vs Pakistan: A Canadian Vlogger’s Take on Hospitality Sparks Debate
India is globally admired for its warm hospitality, embodied in the phrase ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ (Guest is God). However, a recent viral video featuring Canadian traveler Nolan Saumure has sparked an online debate on whether India’s hospitality truly lives up to its reputation when compared to Pakistan.
A Vlogger’s Perspective
Nolan Saumure, an experienced travel vlogger, has explored multiple countries, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the USA. In a recent Instagram interview with @officialnamour, he was asked to compare the hospitality of India and Pakistan. His blunt response—“Pakistan, obviously”—set off a wave of reactions.
Saumure explained his stance, stating that hospitality in India feels transactional, where tourists are often seen as potential sources of income rather than welcomed guests. In contrast, he described Pakistanis as more generous, frequently inviting visitors into their homes, sharing meals, and treating them as part of their community. He went as far as saying, “In India, people treat you like a walking ATM.”
Social Media Reactions
The video went viral, amassing over 4.4 million views and triggering diverse reactions. Some agreed, arguing that India’s booming tourism industry has led to a commercialized approach to guests, unlike Pakistan’s more personal hospitality. Others, however, disagreed, highlighting India’s historical colonial exploitation as a reason why expectations from foreigners differ.
Saumure countered by clarifying that he doesn’t expect special treatment, just a genuinely welcoming experience.
