Doda (Jammu & Kashmir): In a bid to set an example for communal harmony, the Indian Army on Saturday, hosted an Iftar dinner here to celebrate the holy month of Ramzan. Their objective was to show that they are here, not only to ensure law and order, but also to spread communal harmony

Speaking to ANI, an attendee Jaffer Bashir said, that the district officers, local civil members and various other prominent people from various religions gathered at the Army headquarters to relish the Iftar dinner. “This sends a strong message to the country that the Army is there not only to impose law and order in the state, but also to spread goodwill among the different communities,” the attendee was quoted as saying.

Another guest at the Iftar dinner, Mohammad Abdula Bhatt commended the Army saying that it is “a step towards uniting different communities” and said that they “wholeheartedly” welcome such initiatives.

During Ramzan, the devout observe strict fasting for about 30 days. They do not consume food or water from dawn to dusk. They eat Sehri (a pre-dawn meal) and break their day-long fast with the Iftar in the evenings.

Eid ul-Fitr marks the close of the month of Ramzan and is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
