The Indian Navy announced on Thursday that it has transferred nine pirates to the Mumbai Police, who were apprehended in an operation conducted east of Somalia last week.
The operation, carried out by Indian warships INS Trishul and INS Sumedha on March 29, led to the successful rescue of the fishing vessel Al Kambar and its crew of 23 Pakistani nationals. During the operation, all nine pirates involved in piracy were captured.
“INS Trishul arrived at Mumbai on April 3 and handed over all nine pirates to the local police for further legal proceedings in accordance with Indian laws, particularly the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act 2022,” stated Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal. The Navy reiterated its commitment to protecting merchant shipping and seafarers transiting in the Indian Ocean Region, regardless of their nationality.
