An Indian graduate working in the United States has sparked debate online after expressing disappointment over what he described as a modest salary increase and uncertain career growth in the current technology job market.
The graduate, who completed his Master’s degree in Computer Science in May 2025, shared his experience on Reddit, outlining the intense competition he faced while searching for employment. After months of limited interview calls, he secured an internship at a multinational company.
Internship to full-time, but with conditions
Over six months, he gained hands-on experience with tools such as Microsoft Azure and SQL databases. However, he felt the role focused heavily on automation and low-code processes rather than core software development, which did not align fully with his long-term ambitions.
Recently, the company offered to transition him into a full-time role. The offer included extending his internship until June 2026, with full-time status beginning in July. The hourly pay would increase by three dollars, but there would be no sponsorship under the H-1B visa programme.
The proposed title, Business Automation Analyst, further concerned him, as he feared it might affect his future prospects in software engineering.
Online community responds
In his post titled “Stuck in difficult situation and feeling like coming back,” he questioned whether continuing in the US was worthwhile or if returning to India would offer better long-term stability.
Commenters largely advised patience, noting that the global tech sector remains volatile. Many suggested retaining the role while continuing to apply for stronger opportunities, emphasising that experience and skill-building can outweigh job titles.
The discussion reflects broader anxieties among international graduates navigating visa uncertainty, competitive hiring conditions and evolving career paths in a challenging global market.
