Indian Teen Sets World Record In Fastest Mask Application, Netizens Unimpressed

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, personal protective equipment (PPE) like face masks became essential worldwide. This surge in mask usage led to unique feats, including a world record set by Josukutty Elbin from Kerala, India. On October 10, 2023, Josukutty set a Guinness World Record by wearing 10 surgical masks while blindfolded in just 11.56 seconds. The record was achieved at his school and quickly garnered attention online.

Guinness World Records shared a video of the attempt on Instagram, which has since amassed over 8 million views. The video shows Josukutty rapidly putting on each mask according to the rules, which required the straps to be properly positioned around his ears.

Despite the impressive speed, the internet’s reaction was mixed. Many users questioned the value of such a record, with some sarcastically asking about the point of the achievement. Comments ranged from “Hopeless record” to “No respect for records.” Others compared the record to other unconventional achievements recognized by Guinness, such as the fastest burrito eater or the most objects in a beard.
