Chennai: A 45-year-old man from Tamil Nadu, working as a construction labourer in Qatar is facing death sentence, allegedly for murdering a woman.

Chelladurai had left to Qatar in 2011 and after three months he was nabbed in a murder case. Since then his family in Kannisery village of Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu has not seen him.

It was only a week ago that he called his wife C Rajammal and informed her about the capital punishment. The news has let hell loose over the family, which claims that Chelladurai has been falsely implicated in the case. C Rajammal is shattered. She works in a firework factory and unable to make both ends meet, their son Rajesh Kumar has to drop out of his college. Meanwhile, his nephew K Dhanushkodi says that the crime was executed by Chelladurai’s roommate. With no means left Rajammal has petitioned the district collector seeking government intervention.

The District Collector’s office has forwarded her complaint to the state and central governments.

Authorities in the External Affairs Ministry said, “three Indians were sentenced to death in the case. The appeal too was turned down. A clemency petition has been filed.”

The family is hoping against hope that their father and husband would be home soon.
