India’s inaugural digital court, 24*7 ONCOURTS, for handling cheque bounce cases was inaugurated by Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai of the Supreme Court on Friday. This new initiative will manage the entire lifecycle of cases online, from filing and registration to hearings and judgments. The court is set to start accepting cases from September 2024.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan lauded the development as a historic milestone for Kerala’s judiciary. Although Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud was scheduled to launch additional tech-driven judicial initiatives, he was absent due to unforeseen circumstances.
Nandan Nilekani, Infosys co-founder, highlighted the benefits of automation in increasing productivity and reducing case pendency, noting that cheque bounce and Motor Vehicles Act cases constitute significant portions of the judicial workload.
In addition to ONCOURTS, the Chief Minister also inaugurated Special Courts in Ernakulam and Alappuzha for cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act.
Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan V of Kerala High Court emphasized the technological advancements of the digital court, including smart scheduling, real-time case status updates, and integration with institutions like banks and police.
The event also saw the launch of “We-Solv Vimaal Solution Maker,” an online dispute resolution platform developed by the Kerala judiciary, and various other projects aimed at digital empowerment, historical preservation, and judicial education.
