The Indian government, in coordination with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), is conducting a mock emergency broadcast drill today, May 7, 2025. The purpose: to test India’s capacity to issue real-time alerts via sirens and mobile phones during national crises like natural disasters or military attacks.
How to Enable Alerts on Android (Android 11 or higher):
- Open Settings
- Scroll to Safety & Emergency
- Tap Wireless Emergency Alerts
- Enable all available alert options
Note: Wording may vary on brands like Samsung (One UI), Xiaomi (HyperOS), or OnePlus. Alerts may still come through even without an active SIM or while roaming.
🍎How to Enable Alerts on iPhone:
- Go to Settings
- Tap Notifications
- Scroll to the bottom: Government Alerts
- Toggle ON Test Alerts
Why It Matters:
This test is part of India’s disaster preparedness strategy to issue timely warnings during earthquakes, floods, or terrorist attacks. A similar trial in September 2024 saw Delhi-NCR users receive this sample:
“This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunication… No action required.”
Takeaway: Stay Ready
- This is only a test, not a real emergency
