This project will help in Surveillance, Density and Communication, as such a technology is being adapted.

The smart fence has the capacity of functioning under extreme conditions of sandstorms, heavy rains, and dense snowfall.

‘When’ and ‘How’ did it began?

The Central government had a thought of implementing technologically advanced features in securing its borders in the year 2012, when it had released EOI (Expression of Interest is commonly a document that describes requirements and specifications and seeking information from the potential providers that demonstrate their abilities to meet those requirements) with CIBMS (Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System) of India.

The plan did not move in the direction required until the terrorists had attacked the air base stations at the borders in 2015-16. In the year 2016, the Narendra Modi government took an initiative of implementing to protect the borders with sophisticated CCTV, cameras, laser fencing, thermal imagers and so on. Among these ambitious project implementation is the “Laser Fencing”, which is also known as “Smart Fence”.

In 2017, the BSF Director General KK Sharma had said that smart fencing is and should be the priority for the happenings at the Indo-Pak borders.

The project was planned to be implemented in March 2018. Earlier this year the initial kick-off for the smart fencing had begun in the riverine stretch of Assam and Bangladesh. The patrolling by the BSF through boats were replaced with this sophisticated technology to stop infiltration.

General KK Sharma said, “This is a pilot project to make the international border shared by Indian secure.” However, the elaborated features of the smart fencing are not disclosed due to security reasons.

The project is said to be a technical collaboration with ‘Niriket’ a subsidiary of Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM.
