NILGIRIS: An injured leopard spotted near human settlements in the Bitherkad range of the Gudalur forest division was safely captured by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department on Tuesday evening, following a series of sightings in the region.

Residents of Ayyankolli, Narikolli, and areas surrounding the Valadu Maha Vishnu temple had reported multiple leopard sightings over the past few days, prompting officials to launch a swift and focused search operation.

“A cage trap was set up as per the directives of the principal chief conservator of forests and the chief wildlife warden,” said Ravi, Forest Range Officer (FRO). The operation led to the successful and injury-free capture of the leopard.

The big cat was immediately moved to the veterinary facility at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) for medical assessment and treatment. Officials confirmed the animal was injured but stable.

“The leopard will be released back into the core zone of MTR once it fully recovers,” added FRO Ravi. He also thanked the local residents for their vigilance and support.

In an official statement, the forest department assured that efforts are underway to manage human-wildlife interactions using scientific methods and humane handling practices. The incident once again highlights the growing overlap between wildlife territories and human settlements in the Nilgiris.
