VELLORE: Tensions flared at the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital in Adukkamparai on Friday evening after a female intern doctor was allegedly assaulted by a 40-year-old male attendant inside the female ward. The shocking incident prompted nearly 200 postgraduate and intern doctors to stage a protest demanding immediate action.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the 23-year-old intern was checking patients’ vitals. The attendant, upset that she didn’t respond to him immediately, allegedly assaulted her in a drunken state—grabbing her by the neck and pushing her against a wall. When another female intern tried to intervene, she too was allegedly shoved.
Doctors claimed this wasn’t an isolated case. “Eight months ago, an attender attacked a male PG doctor. We demand safety and a registered FIR. We won’t end the protest till action is taken,” said a protesting doctor.
A male postgraduate doctor present at the scene managed to stop the assault. The Deputy Superintendent of Police and the hospital dean arrived and assured the protesting doctors that necessary steps would be taken.
