Nalgonda (AP): In a major crackdown, a kidney racket was busted in Nalgonda district of Telangana. An investigation revealed that kingpin of the racket is a 22-year-old hotel management student.
It has been reported that he initially sold his own kidney for Rs 5 lakh in December 2014. The transplant took place in Colombo.
With the realization that this is a lucrative business, he turned into an agent himself and used social media to lure 15 others to give their kidney. He made use of the profits to lead a lavish lifestyle it is said.
Clients were charged up to Rs 27 lakh for each kidney while the donor got 5 lakh rupees. The rest of the money was shared between hospitals in Colombo and trafficking agents from Telangana, Gujarat, MP. The remaining money was for the travel, accommodation and medical tests.
Three Colombo-based hospitals are suspected to be involved in the illegal trade.
