On December 23, mobile internet services were suspended in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch and Rajouri districts as security forces conducted an extensive search operation to locate terrorists responsible for the recent ambush on two Army vehicles, resulting in the death of five soldiers.

The suspension of mobile internet services followed the mysterious deaths of three individuals allegedly detained by the Army for questioning, sparking widespread resentment after videos circulated purportedly showing the torture of the suspects.

The decision to suspend mobile internet services in Poonch and Rajouri was deemed a precautionary measure to prevent rumor-mongering and potential law and order issues. While both Army and civil authorities remain tight-lipped about the situation on the ground, official sources confirmed the suspension and stated that senior Army, police, and civil officers are closely monitoring the situation. Additional police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas of the districts to maintain peace.

The recent ambush occurred when three to four heavily armed terrorists targeted an army gypsy and a truck, resulting in the death of five soldiers and injuring two others. Following the attack, the terrorists reportedly mutilated the bodies of at least two soldiers and seized weapons. A massive search operation was initiated in the densely forested areas, including nearby Thanamandi in Rajouri, but there has been no fresh contact with the fleeing terrorists as of now.

Additionally, three persons, who were detained for questioning by the Army in connection with the attack, died mysteriously. The bodies of Safeer Hussain, Mohd Showket, and Shabir Ahmad, residents of Topa Peer village in Bufliaz, have been handed over to their families for last rites, while investigations into the cause of their deaths are ongoing.
