Magnitude 3.6 Earthquake Rocks Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir: Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar experienced a seismic event with a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at 8:53 am at a depth of 5 km. NCS shared the information on Twitter, stating, “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.6, Occurred on 16-01-2024, 08:53:53 IST, Lat: 33.34 & Long: 76.70, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Jammu & Kashmir, India.”

In a related event, yesterday, central Assam also felt the tremors of a 3.6 magnitude earthquake on Monday evening, as reported by the NCS. The quake, recorded at 7:12 pm, was centered in East Karbi Anglong district on the southern bank of Brahmaputra, at a depth of 23 km. The epicenter is approximately 170 km east-southeast from Guwahati, near the Nagaland border. Residents in the neighboring West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, and Nagaon districts reported feeling the tremors.

The NCS, serving as the nodal agency of the Government of India for earthquake monitoring, plays a crucial role in keeping track of seismic activity across the country.
