Srinagar: In a recent incident on Friday evening, terrorists targeted an Army convoy in the Krishnagati sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. The soldiers retaliated with gunfire, and, fortunately, there were no reported injuries or casualties at this time. Reports suggest that the attackers may have managed to escape following the initial exchange of gunfire, which originated from a nearby hill.

The assault occurred while senior military officials, including Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, were in Poonch to strategize responses to the frequent terror attacks in the region. This marks the second attack on the Army in recent weeks, with the previous ambush in Poonch’s Dera Ki Gali resulting in the tragic death of four soldiers and injuries to five others.

The Pir Panjal region, encompassing Rajouri and Poonch, has remained free from terrorism since 2003. However, a surge in major attacks has been observed since October 2021, resulting in the loss of 20 soldiers, including officers and commandos, over the past seven months. In the last two years, the areas have witnessed the death of over 35 soldiers in action.

Addressing the concerning situation, Army Chief General Manoj Pande highlighted the active involvement of India’s adversaries, likely referring to Pakistan, in supporting terrorists in the Rajouri and Poonch regions. General Pande unveiled a comprehensive nine-point action plan to address the rising terrorism, focusing on enhanced intelligence gathering, improved coordination with police and local security officials, and outreach to local populations. Emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights, General Pande’s plan aims to restore peace and stability in Rajouri. This initiative comes in the wake of the unfortunate demise of three civilians who were detained for questioning following a terror attack in Poonch that claimed the lives of four soldiers.
