A Japanese Coast Guard vessel, Itsukushima, arrived at Chennai Port on Monday, highlighting the strengthening maritime ties between India and Japan in the Indo-Pacific. The port call is part of the JCG’s Global Ocean Voyage Training, showcasing both nations’ shared focus on maritime security and collaboration.
Led by Captain Naoki Mizoguchi, Itsukushima was welcomed with ceremonial honours by the Indian Coast Guard, headed by Inspector General Datwinder Singh Saini. The reception included garlands, a military band, and applause from National Cadet Corps cadets, blending tradition with formality.
Vice Admiral Hiroaki Kanosue, Vice Commandant for Operations of the JCG, also travelled to Chennai, underscoring the visit’s diplomatic and operational significance.
Throughout the week, the Japanese delegation will participate in courtesy calls, ship tours, and cultural programs. A key event will be the bilateral meeting between Additional Director General Donny Michael, Commander of the ICG’s Eastern Seaboard, and the Japanese team. The delegation is also set to meet ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani, underlining the engagement’s high-level stature.
Planned joint activities include a yoga session and Exercise Jaa Mata, a cooperative maritime drill as the vessel continues to Singapore. To deepen professional exchange, four Indian Coast Guard officers will embark on Itsukushima as sea riders.
This visit builds on the 2006 Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Japan, which established a framework for joint drills, frequent exchanges, and strategic dialogue between the two coast guards.
