Unidentified thieves stole a bag containing ₹1.68 crore worth of jewellery and ₹2 lakh in cash from a passenger aboard an MSRTC bus on the Mumbai-Nashik highway, as reported by police on Sunday.
The incident occurred at 1:30 AM on Saturday near Umbarmali village in Thane’s Shahapur taluka. According to Kasara police station inspector Suresh Gavit, the victim, Kiran Kumar Purohit, a jeweller from Bhayander East, was returning from a business trip when the theft took place. He had placed his bag on his seat and stepped off to buy water. Four individuals then entered the bus, seized the bag, and escaped in a car towards Mumbai.
Despite the bus driver’s attempt to pursue the thieves, the car managed to flee. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and other technical leads to identify and apprehend the suspects. A theft case and other charges have been filed under the Indian Penal Code.
