Jnanavapi Mosque Management Rejects ASI Survey
Prayagraj: The management of the Gyanvapi Masjid in Prayagraj has informed the Allahabad High Court that they will not permit an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey in the area. The decision is based on a Supreme Court order that mandates the preservation of the ‘vazhukhana’ (ablution area) of the mosque.
In an affidavit submitted to the High Court on Thursday, the Anjuman Intejamia Committee stated that the issue regarding the vazhukhana and a purported ‘Shivalinga’ is already under consideration by the Supreme Court. The committee emphasised that the area is protected by an injunction and that they have been entrusted with its safety and security. As a result, they will not allow any further actions, such as an ASI survey, in the vazhukhana.
The committee’s stance underscores the ongoing legal battle surrounding the Gyanvapi Masjid and the sensitive nature of the dispute. The Supreme Court’s order to preserve the vazhukhana highlights the importance of protecting the mosque’s religious and cultural significance.
