THRISSUR: A wave of violence linked to the nationwide general strike rocked parts of Thrissur district on Wednesday, with multiple incidents of vandalism, assault, and intimidation reported across the region.

The most serious episode occurred near the western entrance of the Guruvayur temple, where protesters allegedly led by CITU leader Aneesh went on a rampage. Aneesh, said to be facing multiple criminal charges and known for running a roadside stall near the temple’s eastern gate, reportedly spearheaded the attack on three commercial establishments, including a hotel.

According to witnesses and police, the violence began after 9 a.m. when a textile store and a utensil shop were targeted. Aneesh allegedly threatened the textile shop owner, ransacked the premises, and warned them against reopening. The group then stormed Souparnika Hotel nearby, breaking glass panels and damaging property. Several women and children, who were dining after visiting the temple, were allegedly intimidated by the mob.

In another incident around 10:30 a.m., strike supporters forcibly shut down Samridhi Supermarket along the Pattikkad–Peechi road. Protesters assaulted a staff member named Ajith and looted goods. When a local news channel crew began filming the incident, they were attacked, and their camera footage was deliberately destroyed. Journalists Joseph and Mons were reportedly among the victims.

Ajith later filed a police complaint with the Peechi station, supported by the supermarket owner. Authorities have launched investigations into the incidents.
