KOLKATA: A female junior doctor has accused an app-based biker of harassment after he sent her sexually explicit content following the cancellation of a ride. The former student of CNMCH, now a first-year postgraduate trainee at a private hospital along the Bypass, filed a police complaint that led to the biker’s arrest. The incident occurred in Purba Jadavpur on Thursday.

According to Deputy Commissioner (East) Arish Bilal, the investigation began immediately after the complaint was lodged, resulting in the arrest of Raju Das, 41, a resident of Mukundapur, on Friday morning. The woman had booked a ride on Thursday but canceled it due to an emergency. Following the cancellation, the biker reportedly called her 17 times, questioning her decision even though he was several kilometers away.

The situation escalated when Das allegedly sent obscene videos via WhatsApp. When the doctor confronted him about his behavior, he became abusive. After filing a complaint with East Jadavpur police and reporting the matter to the cyber cell, police traced the booking details with the help of the ride-hailing company and summoned Das for questioning. They arrested him upon finding sufficient evidence to support the allegations.

“The rider informed me he would arrive late. I was in a hurry, so I canceled the ride. However, once I got into another car, he started calling and harassing me,” the doctor recounted. Authorities plan to move to court to record her statement before a magistrate, while the app company has stated its commitment to cooperating with the investigation, reiterating its zero-tolerance policy toward passenger harassment. The biker faces multiple charges under sections 75 (sexual harassment), 79 (outraging a woman’s modesty), and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
