Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mention of Kalaburagi’s Jolad Rotti (sorghum flatbread) in his June 29, 2025 Mann Ki Baat broadcast has triggered both celebration and political commentary across Karnataka.

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Priyank Kharge hailed the recognition as a triumph for local entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment. “The Kalaburagi Rotti story reflects the success of well-implemented government schemes promoting skills, markets, and self-reliance,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a shining example of the Congress-led government’s ‘Kaam ki Baat’ — a pointed dig at BJP critics who once dubbed Kalaburagi the “Republic of Kalaburagi.”

The Jolad Rotti, a traditional millet-based flatbread, has gained popularity as a regional brand through targeted rural development programs. An online platform to market the product has created significant income opportunities for self-help groups and women entrepreneurs.

The district’s Deputy Commissioner echoed the sentiment, calling Modi’s mention a “matter of pride.” The slogan “Kalaburagi Rotti, the power of millets” has since gone viral, celebrating the dish’s journey from rural kitchens to national prominence.

Samad Patel, Joint Director of Agriculture, shared that over 1,000 women have found jobs through the deployment of 100 rotti-making machines. He added that self-help groups are now thriving across the district.

As the recognition fuels renewed focus on millet-driven entrepreneurship, the political significance of the PM’s nod hasn’t gone unnoticed — blending culinary pride with a battle of narratives.
