The detention of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and JMM’s Hemant Soren has thrust their wives into the spotlight. Sunita Kejriwal and Kalpana Soren have emerged as prominent figures within the INDIA camp in the midst of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, suggesting a potential readiness for broader political roles.

During a recent rally in Ranchi, where opposition parties launched a vigorous assault on the BJP for purportedly exploiting central agencies to intimidate opposition-governed states, both Sunita and Kalpana were among the prominent INDIA bloc leaders in attendance.

At the rally, two chairs conspicuously remained unoccupied on stage, bearing the name tags of Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Soren, while their spouses took their places on the dais. The ‘Ulgulan Nyay Mahrally’, orchestrated by the JMM amid the election fervor, witnessed a formidable display of strength, drawing leaders from 28 political factions including Mallikarjun Kharge, Tejashwi Yadav, Bhagwant Mann, and Akhilesh Yadav.

During her address, Sunita Kejriwal condemned the government’s actions, alleging that her diabetic husband was being deprived of insulin while in custody, echoing claims previously made by the Aam Aadmi Party. She asserted, “They are trying to endanger the life of my husband Arvind Kejriwal. His food is monitored by cameras, and he is being denied insulin. My husband, a diabetic for the past 12 years, requires 50 units of insulin daily.”

Stressing that no charges have been substantiated against her husband, she declared their determination to prevail against “dictatorship,” asserting, “The prison gates will give way, and Arvind Kejriwal and Hemant Soren will emerge victorious.”

Kalpana Soren also lambasted the BJP for purportedly orchestrating efforts to destabilize opposition-led state governments, which she alleged led to the arrests of Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Soren just prior to the elections. She relayed a message from her husband at the rally, stating, “Central agencies such as the ED and CBI are being wielded to stifle the opposition’s voice, but the BJP and its allies will be ousted.”

Mr. Kejriwal was detained by the Enforcement Directorate last month in connection with a money laundering case related to the liquor policy scam. Despite his detention, he continues to serve as Chief Minister, with the AAP asserting that no law prohibits him from governing while incarcerated.

Mr. Soren had stepped down from his position earlier following his arrest in January by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land fraud. JMM leader Champai Soren assumed the role of Chief Minister in February amidst speculation that Ms. Soren might succeed her husband.
