Celebrations following the United Democratic Front’s (UDF) decisive victory in the Kerala civic body elections turned tragic on Saturday evening when a party activist died after a fireworks explosion in Kondotty, police said.
Fireworks explode during victory celebration
The deceased has been identified as Irshad (40), a UDF activist and local resident. According to Kondotty police, the incident occurred when Irshad was celebrating the election results by bursting crackers while riding his two-wheeler through the town.
Police said Irshad was carrying a large quantity of firecrackers on his scooter. During the celebration, sparks from the crackers he was bursting reportedly fell onto the stock of fireworks stored in the vehicle, triggering a sudden and powerful explosion.
Fatal burn injuries
The blast set both Irshad and his scooter on fire, causing severe burn injuries. He died on the spot before any medical assistance could be provided, police officials said.
The explosion created panic in the area, with local residents and passers-by rushing to the spot. Fire and rescue personnel were alerted, but by the time help arrived, the activist had already succumbed to his injuries.
Police caution against unsafe celebrations
Kondotty police confirmed that the incident appears to be accidental. Inquest proceedings have been initiated, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted as per procedure. The body will be handed over to the family after completing the formalities.
Police officials said the case once again highlights the dangers of handling firecrackers without proper safety precautions, especially in public places and on moving vehicles.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the UDF’s electoral celebrations in the region. Local leaders expressed shock and grief over the incident and extended condolences to Irshad’s family.
Authorities have urged political workers and the public to celebrate electoral victories responsibly, warning that reckless handling of fireworks can lead to irreversible loss of life and property.
The incident adds to growing concerns over safety during political and festival celebrations in Kerala, where fireworks-related accidents continue to claim lives despite repeated warnings and regulations.
