Thiruvananthapuram: In a welcome move for temporary teaching staff, the Kerala government has officially revised the pay scale for guest lecturers working under both the Department of Collegiate Education and the Department of Technical Education.
Under the updated structure, educators holding qualifications recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) will now earn ₹2,200 per working day, subject to a maximum of ₹50,000 per month. Meanwhile, guest lecturers without UGC-approved credentials will receive ₹1,800 per day, with their monthly earnings capped at ₹45,000.
This revision marks a significant improvement from the earlier pay rates, which stood at ₹1,750 per day for UGC-qualified faculty and ₹1,600 for others. The new policy aims to provide better financial support to part-time teaching staff who contribute substantially to higher education institutions across the state.
Hundreds of guest faculty members in government and aided colleges are expected to benefit from the increased remuneration. The decision acknowledges their vital role in maintaining academic standards despite not holding permanent positions. It also reflects the state’s broader commitment to improving working conditions in the education sector.
The revised pay will help reduce disparities and offer improved job satisfaction, especially for those who rely heavily on these positions for livelihood. The move is seen as both timely and necessary, given rising living costs and growing demands on academic professionals.
