Kerala Landslide Survivor Faces Further Tragedy as Fiancé Dies in Accident
In a sequence of tragic events, 24-year-old Shruti from Kerala has endured immense suffering following the recent catastrophic landslides in Wayanad district. Just as she was grappling with the loss of her entire family, including her parents and younger sister, Shruti faced yet another devastating blow when her fiancé, Jenson, died following a severe car accident.
The accident occurred on September 10, when Jenson, 27, was involved in a head-on collision with a private bus. He was admitted to Dr Moopen Medical College, where his condition was described as extremely critical. Despite medical efforts, Jenson succumbed to his injuries at 8.50 pm on Wednesday, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the private hospital.
Jenson had been in a critical state since the accident, suffering from severe bleeding and significant brain injuries. He had been Shruti’s sole support after the tragic loss of her family on July 30, when landslides struck Chooralmala and Mundakkai villages in Meppadi panchayat. The disaster claimed the lives of Shruti’s family of nine, leaving her with overwhelming grief and loss.
The couple had been engaged since June 2 after a decade-long courtship. In a show of solidarity and commitment, they visited Puthumala graveyard on August 29 to pay their respects to her deceased family members and reaffirm their commitment to each other. They had planned to marry in December with a grand celebration but were considering a simpler court-registered marriage in September due to the recent tragedies.
On the day of the accident, Shruti and other family members of Jenson were also injured. The collision left them with significant injuries, compounding the couple’s existing hardships. In addition to the emotional toll, Shruti lost approximately ₹4 lakh in cash, 15 ‘sovereigns’ of gold, and her newly-built home in the landslides, which have claimed over 200 lives.
As Shruti navigates through these compounded tragedies, the support of family and friends will be crucial in helping her cope with the profound loss and ongoing challenges. The situation underscores the deep personal toll of natural disasters and subsequent accidents, highlighting the need for compassion and support in such trying times.
