Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant step towards strengthening protection mechanisms for women and girls facing domestic violence, Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Veena George has announced the formation of a special cell to ensure continuous support for survivors. The initiative coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act.

Inaugurating a new ₹60-lakh Sakhi One-Stop Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, the minister said that dedicated district dowry prohibition officers have also been appointed to boost efforts at the local level.

Currently, each of Kerala’s 14 districts has one Sakhi centre, and two more will be established in Ernakulam and Kozhikode. These centres offer survivors comprehensive services including legal help, medical care, police aid, counselling, and temporary shelter — all under one roof.

Over 22,000 women and children have already received assistance through these centres, George noted, adding that continuity of care and resolution of complaints are vital. “When a woman or girl faces violence, she may not always be able to speak or even make a phone call. That’s where others must step in and report what they witness,” she said.

Reports can be made anonymously and will be verified before action is taken. For immediate help, the Mitra 181 helpline remains active 24/7.

The Sakhi project is a joint venture by the central and state governments, implemented through the WCD department to create safer, more responsive systems for women in crisis.
