Police in Kothamangalam, Kerala, have detained Ramees, a resident of Paravoor and temporary employee at Kochi Airport, in connection with the death of 23-year-old Teacher’s Training Course student, Sona Eldhose.
Sona was discovered hanging in her residence on Saturday. A note recovered the next day accuses Ramees of repeated physical and emotional abuse, unlawful confinement, and persistent pressure to convert her religion before marriage. It also mentions his relatives and friends, claiming they demanded conversion as a prerequisite for marriage and insisted she live in his family home.
Her mother alleged Sona was assaulted last week after resisting an attempt to take her to Ponnani for religious conversion. “She agreed to a registered marriage, but refused conversion,” the mother stated.
Investigators say WhatsApp chats reveal Ramees replying “go ahead” when Sona threatened to end her life.
Family members said the couple’s relationship began during college but became abusive over time. Ramees’s family allegedly warned he would face social boycott from the mosque without her conversion. Sona initially consented but postponed due to her father’s recent demise. Her brother claimed she forgave Ramees despite a previous arrest in an immoral trafficking case.
Recently, Ramees allegedly confined her at his home, assaulted her, and arranged transport to Ponnani. When she declined, he reportedly told her to die.
The case has been upgraded from unnatural death to abetment of suicide, and police are continuing their interrogation.
