Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s health department swings into action after bird flu confirmation in Alappuzha’s ducks.

Following bird flu reports in two Alappuzha panchayats, the state health minister has directed swift measures under the Kerala Public Health Act (2023). Local committees will assess the situation and implement necessary controls. Additionally, all panchayats in Alappuzha and surrounding areas are reviving “One Health” committees, fostering a collaborative approach between animal and human health sectors.

The Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) has begun culling operations in Alappuzha’s affected Kuttanad region. Around 21,000 ducks in the epicenters – Edathua and Cheruthana – will be culled. Furthermore, all birds within a one-kilometer radius will undergo culling to prevent further spread.

Neighboring Tamil Nadu has heightened vigilance at 12 border check posts to curb the bird flu’s potential spread. Veterinary personnel are stationed at these posts to inspect poultry products entering from Kerala. Disinfection measures are also being implemented on vehicles.

H5N1, a highly contagious avian influenza strain, primarily affects birds but can occasionally jump to humans and other mammals. While it can be fatal in non-avian species, properly cooked poultry and eggs pose no risk. The virus spreads through contact with infected animal fluids.

H5N1 symptoms in humans can vary widely, ranging from mild (conjunctivitis, flu-like symptoms) to severe (requiring hospitalization). Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, and difficulty breathing. Diagnosis involves respiratory tract swab testing.

Treatment typically involves antiviral medication like Tamiflu. Supportive care like rest and hydration is crucial, especially in severe cases. To prevent infection, avoid contact with sick birds, practice good hygiene (handwashing), and ensure thorough poultry cooking. Wearing protective gear while handling sick birds or cleaning contaminated areas is highly recommended.
