Machilakath Abdul Rahim, a resident of Kozhikode, can finally breathe a sigh of relief after 18 years, as a remarkable crowdfunding initiative has secured his reprieve from a looming death sentence. Accused of unintentionally causing the death of a Saudi boy in 2006, Rahim faced a dire fate until the collective efforts of modern technology and human compassion intervened.

Accident Alters Life

Rahim’s life took an unforeseen turn when, while working as an autorickshaw driver in Feroke near Kozhikode, he ventured to Saudi Arabia to work as a driver for a Saudi national. Tragically, during his employment, a mishap occurred, leading to the accidental death of the employer’s differently-abled son, Anas. Despite Rahim’s lack of intent, he faced severe legal repercussions, including a death sentence handed down by a court in Riyadh.

A Crowdfunding Miracle

The Abdul Rahim Legal Assistance Committee, established in 2021, tirelessly worked towards Rahim’s release. Their breakthrough came in December 2023, when negotiations with the victim’s family resulted in a blood money deal amounting to 15 million Saudi riyals. To fund this monumental sum, a crowdfunding campaign was launched, leveraging the holy month of Ramzan for charitable contributions. A dedicated app, Spinecode, facilitated transparent and efficient donations, instilling confidence in contributors.

Massive Contributions and Unity

The campaign garnered extraordinary support, with notable contributions from various quarters. Boby Chemmannur, a prominent businessman, led the charge with a generous donation of Rs 1 crore, inspiring others to contribute. Remarkably, individuals from diverse backgrounds, including laborers and volunteers, joined forces, emphasizing the collective spirit underlying the initiative. The Kerala community, transcending barriers of religion and social status, rallied together to save a life.

Awaiting Homecoming

With the ‘diya’ (blood money) now secured, Rahim’s mother, who has endured years of anguish and separation, eagerly anticipates her son’s return. Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support, she reflects on the power of unity and compassion in overcoming adversity.

A Symbol of Hope

Rahim’s journey, from the brink of a death sentence to newfound freedom, stands as a testament to the resilience and generosity of humanity. Amidst challenges and divisions, the collective effort to save a life echoes the true essence of Kerala’s unity and compassion.
