The scorching summer temperatures have posed challenges to the operations of the Indira Priyadarshini Children’s Park in Kochi. The depletion of water levels in the park’s pond has led authorities to halt boat rides for children, a popular attraction during the summer vacation period. This setback has significantly impacted park operations, particularly during the peak footfall season.

Efforts to Address Concerns

T J Vinod MLA has taken note of the complaints regarding the suspension of boat rides and has intervened by contacting officials from the district tourism promotion council (DTPC). He has instructed them to take immediate measures to resume the service, with assurances from DTPC officials to expedite the process. Vinod emphasized the importance of providing adequate facilities in the park, especially during the influx of children during school vacations.

Challenges with Water Levels

Officials attribute the disruption of boat services to the unprecedented depletion of water levels, a situation exacerbated by the natural percolation of water into the ground, despite attempts to pump water into the pond. Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to refill the pond and restore boat services promptly.

Operational History and Management Issues

The park has faced operational challenges for several years, including delays in renovations and inadequate facilities following its reopening in 2018. Criticism has been directed at the administrative council’s perceived incompetence, with calls for a more competent agency or the Kochi Corporation to take over management. Suggestions have been made to utilize funds, such as CSR funds, to enhance park facilities.

Concerns Beyond the Children’s Park

The lack of open spaces is noted as a broader issue, potentially contributing to children remaining indoors. Proper management of existing facilities is deemed crucial to mitigate this situation. Additionally, the neighboring renewable energy park faces infrastructure deficiencies, with the children’s train out of service for months, highlighting broader maintenance challenges faced by park authorities.

Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to address concerns and restore the enjoyable experiences for visitors to the Indira Priyadarshini Children’s Park and its adjacent areas.
