Thiruvananthapuram : When Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made a statewide tour, a farmer applied and was granted relief worth Rs 515.

The state government team led by Vijayan had been gathering statements from citizens when the farmer from Iritty in Kannur, the chief minister’s home district, submitted his application for relief in November.

According to the impoverished farmer, who applied for relief, he had taken out a loan of Rs. 4 lakh to renovate his home and was having difficulty repaying it.

CM Vijayan made it clear when the yatra departed Kasargod that all of the representations would be investigated and a resolution would be found within two to forty-five days.

The farmer, who had been hoping for some sort of relief, was taken aback to receive a response from the Kerala Bank a few days prior to his application. The response stated that he has received a relief of Rs 515 and that, at the latest, on December 31, he will remit the remaining balance of Rs 3,97,216.

This impoverished farmer had to forgo his day job as a laborer, where he earns Rs 1,000, in order to submit his application, and all he received was a relief of Rs 515, according to State Congress vice president and former legislator V.T. Balaram.

Meanwhile, Vijayan’s statewide tour has been criticized by the opposition led by Congress.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s statewide luxury bus trip with his cabinet touching all the 140 Assembly constituencies that began from Kasargod ended here on Saturday.

Named as the ‘Nava Kerala Yatra’, Vijayan and the ruling Left claimed it was a huge success, while the opposition termed it as the ‘last’ trip of a Communist government in India, but on Tuesday the travails of a poor farmer in Vijayan’s home district Kannur has become the butt of jokes.
