Alappuzha: A severe disruption in kerosene supply has hit ration shops across the district, with distribution commencing in only 265 outlets located in Ambalapuzha, Cherthala, and Karthikappally taluks. However, ration shops in Chengannur, Mavelikkara, and Kuttanad remain without any supply. Out of a total of 1,199 shops, distribution has yet to begin in 934.
Only three taluks — Ambalapuzha, Cherthala, and Karthikappally — are equipped with wholesale kerosene supply depots. Yet, even within these taluks, not all shops have received sufficient stock.
Originally, shops in other taluks were expected to collect kerosene from these distribution points. But vendors expressed their inability to travel long distances for pickup. Although that decision was eventually revised, authorities still failed to dispatch the necessary quantity of fuel.
The central allocation for kerosene, meant for April to June, now hangs in the balance. If not distributed before the end of this month, the allotment will lapse, creating further scarcity.
Frustration is growing, with civil supplies officials facing backlash for their perceived inefficiency and lack of urgency. Adding to the controversy, a recent circular from the civil supplies department called for action against ration shops that were allegedly unwilling to receive their quota — a move that has stirred sharp criticism.
Local retailers claim that the government is trying to shift the blame onto them, while the root issue remains the failure to deliver the promised fuel in the first place.
