Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has penned a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing serious concerns about alleged security lapses during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam. Kharge pointed out a series of incidents, asserting that the Assam Police failed to provide adequate security to Yatra participants, including Rahul Gandhi, who holds Z+ security.
Kharge accused the Assam Police of prioritizing the protection of BJP posters over ensuring a safe passage for the Yatra. Specifically, he highlighted the Sonitpur incident, where BJP workers reportedly assaulted the Congress’ social media team and Jairam Ramesh’s vehicle. Ramesh, sharing a video of the incident, claimed that BJP cadres, influenced by Himanta Biswa Sarma, were responsible.
Kharge also referenced the January 21 incident in which Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah was injured during an alleged attack on the party’s outreach program in Nagaon district. Having joined the Yatra on Sunday, Kharge claimed that the Assam Police “systematically allowed” BJP workers to breach Rahul Gandhi’s security cordon. He expressed disappointment over the lack of arrests and investigations into these reported incidents.
