Fear returned to the forests of Maharashtra on Sunday as a rogue elephant, known as ME3, killed yet another farmer—its third human fatality in a year. The incident occurred in Jathlapur village, Sindewahi taluka of Chandrapur district.
The victim has been identified as 55-year-old Kavudu Masram, a resident of the same village. ME3, along with a companion elephant, had been sighted frequently in the region over the last few weeks, raising tension among forest dwellers and farmers.
Originally from Chhattisgarh, ME3 reportedly ventured into Maharashtra after its habitat was destroyed due to rampant mining activities in 2023. Wildlife officials believe the elephant was separated from its herd and has since exhibited aggressive behaviour.
This latest killing comes after ME3 fatally attacked two farmers in Telangana’s Asifabad district in 2024. The elephant’s return to the Telangana-Maharashtra border had already reignited panic among villagers, many of whom now avoid venturing into their fields.
Forest departments across both states are on alert, and measures are reportedly underway to track and contain the animal before further harm occurs.
