Kolkata: A doctor, Nur Alam Sardar, has been arrested by the Kolkata Police for allegedly raping a 26-year-old female patient at his clinic in Hasnabad, North 24 Parganas. The horrific incident reportedly involved the accused administering sedatives to the victim, after which he filmed the assault and threatened to share the video on social media.

According to reports, Sardar extorted ₹4 lakh from the woman, using the recorded footage as leverage to blackmail her into submission. The situation came to light when the victim, accompanied by her husband, filed a first information report (FIR) with the Hasnabad Police earlier this week. Following the complaint, the police apprehended Sardar at his clinic-cum-residence in the Barunhat area.

Basirhat SP Hossain Mehedi Rehman stated, “The accused, a registered medical practitioner, was arrested for allegedly raping his patient after rendering her unconscious. An investigation is underway, and the woman’s confidential statement has been recorded.” The accused has since been remanded in police custody for four days as the investigation continues.

This alarming case arises amidst a backdrop of legislative changes in West Bengal, where the government recently passed a bill to impose the death penalty in cases involving rape and murder. The new law seeks to enhance penalties for such crimes and increase protections for victims.
