Kolkata: CM says situation improving, aids announced

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said water levels in Kolkata have “receded quite a bit” after the recent flooding, though some low-lying areas remain inundated. Meanwhile, she announced an ex-gratia payment for the families of those who died in the rain-related incidents.

Flooding, rain and electrocution claims lives

Heavy overnight rainfall led to widespread waterlogging across Kolkata and adjoining areas. Multiple people lost their lives — several due to electrocution after coming in contact with exposed or faulty electric wires submerged in water. The flooding disrupted transport services and caused damage to infrastructure.

Relief measures and compensation

The state government has approved ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for each next of kin of those who died in rain-related incidents. Mamata also urged the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) to provide ₹5 lakh compensation to families of those electrocuted, and promised that if CESC does not extend employment to victims’ kin, the state government would.

CM’s remarks & broader context

Speaking at a Durga Puja event, Mamata acknowledged the “natural disaster” but emphasized that most of the flooded areas have drained except for a few low-lying zones. She also lamented long-standing negligence in dredging of waterways and infrastructure upstream (e.g., Farakka Barrage, Kolkata Port) that aggravates flood impact

Conclusion

With receding waters, relief and restoration efforts are underway. The ex-gratia and employment promise aim to bring immediate support to bereaved families. Officials continue to monitor low-lying zones and work toward preventing similar crises with better infrastructure and emergency response planning.
