KOLKATA: Kolkata Metro Railway authorities have reported a notable increase in the sale and usage of Metro Smart Cards from May to July 2024. During this period, over one lakh Smart Cards were sold, indicating a shift towards digital payment methods and more streamlined travel experiences for commuters.
The popularity of the ‘Metro Ride Kolkata’ app, which allows users to purchase tickets and make payments online, has significantly contributed to this trend. This app eliminates the need for cash transactions and manual ticket purchases, offering greater convenience to passengers.
Additionally, the ability to buy and recharge Smart Cards using UPI payment modes at ASCRM machines or counters has enhanced their attractiveness. Metro Smart Cards provide financial benefits and the convenience of using a single card for travel across all Metro corridors in Kolkata.
The Blue Line recorded the highest number of Smart Card sales with over 83,000 cards sold, followed by the Green Line-2 with more than 14,000 cards, and the Green Line-1 with over 8,000 cards sold. Recharges also saw substantial figures, with approximately 23 lakh recharges on the Blue Line, 13 lakh on Green Line-2, and 12 lakh on Green Line-1.
Metro authorities expect the trend to continue as more commuters embrace this efficient and user-friendly ticketing system.
