Kolkata: A Kolkata professor is caught in eye of storm after making sexist remarks.

Professor Kanak Sarkar from Jadavpur University, teaching International Relations, has commented on social media saying, “Virgin girl is like a sealed bottle or sealed packet”.

In his short write up in the series titled “Value Oriented Social Counseling for Educated Youth”, he has argued for virgin brides and passed derogatory remarks.

Sarkar has expressed his opinion on Facebook saying that it was his opinion and that he was free to express anything as the Supreme Court had ruled out Section 66 A of Information Technology Act which would penalize any individual on posting offensive messages and also had conferred power to legal authorities of “interception or monitoring or decryption of any information through any computer resource”.

He recalled the posts of writer Taslima Nasrin and Bengali Poet Srijato, who had expressed their comments on religion and Hindu Gods extensively.

Although Sarkar has stated that he was conducting research on social well being, ironically, he has deleted the post.

As a counter reaction, the Chairperson of State Women Commission Leena Gangopadhyay has criticized Prof. Sarkar’s opinion on virgin girls and said that it had shown the mentality of some people who have changed their attitude and perception minimally.

Meanwhile, his comments have drawn flak on social media, based on which his colleagues have refrained from supporting the comments made.
