A physical education teacher at Kolkata’s Scottish Church College has been suspended following accusations of harassment by a second-year student. The student alleged that the teacher, Samir Roy, had been sending inappropriate messages and abusing his authority by offering academic help in exchange for favors.

The student had reportedly informed the college administration about the harassment earlier, but no action was taken, leading to protests from students on Thursday. The college principal, Madhumanjari Mandal, confirmed that the teacher was suspended immediately after a written complaint was filed by the student. “The authority suspended the concerned teacher from service in the college with immediate effect till the governing body takes further decision,” she said.

The student had reportedly informed her family about the teacher’s behavior, and the matter was brought to light through a complaint. The teacher’s actions had allegedly caused distress to the student, who had reported the issue earlier without making a formal complaint.

The harassment is said to have been ongoing since the student’s admission in 2023.
