KOLLAM: Despite holding valid driving licences, many motorists in Kerala continue to display poor driving skills and a disregard for basic road etiquette—misusing indicators, neglecting dim lights at night, and treating roads like battlegrounds. These lapses often lead to avoidable accidents and fatalities.
Until now, drivers whose licences were suspended following accidents had to attend mandatory retraining at the Institute of Driver Training and Research (IDTR) in Edappal, Malappuram, and submit a completion certificate to reinstate their licence.
But starting July, Kollam will host its own IDTR training centre, making essential driver education more accessible. This new facility is being launched with the support of Track, a voluntary organisation known for its road accident response initiatives.
The centre will commence operations once 50 applications are received. The training course will run for five days, covering road discipline, driving responsibility, and in-depth understanding of vehicle components and their functions.
This initiative is expected to bring about a significant change in driving behaviour, promoting safer roads and more responsible motorists in the region.
